Bionic Photosynthetic: Innovative Curtain Wall Design Mimics Plant Photosynthesis

TAIWAN (CHINA) -- /DESIGN/newswire -- Aug 22, 2019

Sean Wei-Zhe Lin's Bionic Photosynthetic curtain wall design integrates plant characteristics to operate photosynthesis, reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This sustainable design was realized in Taipei, Taiwan, from Spring to Summer 2019.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bionic Photosynthetic Curtain Wall Design

Sean Wei-Zhe Lin's innovative Bionic Photosynthetic curtain wall design draws inspiration from plants, mimicking their roots, stems, veins, and leaf tissue. The system operates photosynthesis, continuously reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, akin to the leaves of a tree.

The artificial photosynthesis system utilizes 3D printing to create veins for water transportation within the curtain wall frame, enabling the water needed for photosynthesis and post-photosynthesis liquid removal. The design's unique properties lie in its biomimicry of plant structures and its sustainable operation.

The Bionic Photosynthetic system bionics the roots, stems, veins, and leaves of plants through 3D printing, creating a sustainable process that reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The curtain wall's dimensions are H 150cm x W 150cm x D 6cm in a triangle shape, offering a visually striking and environmentally beneficial architectural feature.

Lin's design team, including Wei-Zhe Lin, Chi-Luen Chern, Pei-Chi Tsai, and Chao-Chun Kung, contributed to the realization of this innovative curtain wall design.

The Bionic Photosynthetic curtain wall operates through the bionics of stems and leaves, utilizing 3D printing to create water transportation veins within the frame. This sustainable process reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, offering a unique approach to architectural sustainability.

Lin's research on the carbon dioxide consumption unit, photosynthesis efficiency, and the curtain wall's ability to reduce the building's carbon footprint demonstrates the thorough scientific and technical underpinnings of this innovative design.

Intellectual property for the Bionic Photosynthetic curtain wall design belongs to NTUST Green Pioneer, and the design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020 for its sustainable and innovative approach.
