Xiaoyan Wei's "H Chair" Redefines Neoclassical Design with Dramatic Visual Diversity

Xiaoyan Wei's "H Chair" is a remarkable addition to the "interval" furniture series, drawing inspiration from the free-flowing curves and forms in a neutral space to provide users with a comforting and "breathable" experience. The chair's visual language offers a unique interpretation of 18th-century neoclassical design, creating a sense of contradiction through the combination of hard wood and soft texture. The use of brass metal rods not only stabilizes the structure but also brings dramatic visual diversity, highlighting the "breathable" negative space formed by two flowing curves with different linearity.

Constructed using bentwood, ash wood, brass, and leather, the "H Chair" measures 660mm in width, 772mm in depth, and 650mm in height. Its design challenges were met with extensive research and field work to capture the essence of neoclassical design while infusing modern elements. The chair's interaction is characterized by the balance of two bentwood pieces connected by gold metal components, maintaining the chair's original flowing state.

The "H Chair" project commenced in April 2019 and concluded in August 2019 in Los Angeles, with an exhibition at SaloneSatellite in April 2020. Xiaoyan Wei's dedication to creating furniture that captures surprise and punctuation in neutral spaces is evident in the "H Chair," which serves as a testament to her innovative design approach and meticulous attention to detail.
