Kiyotoshi Mori's innovative Hat on the Ridge villa and gallery, completed in May 2019, offers a new perspective on residential architecture in Kamakura, Japan, blending into the mountain range while providing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kiyotoshi Mori's Hat on the Ridge is a two-story wooden building, standing at 6825mm wide, 6825mm deep, and 6970mm tall. The design draws inspiration from pit dwellings, creating a semi-subterranean-like space that connects with the bedrock and features a unique square roof that opens to the landscape.
The roof's four edges offer different views of the mountain, valley, village, and sky, creating distinct spaces with unique vistas. The construction, which started in September 2018, posed challenges due to the soft sediment covering the bedrock, requiring the removal of soil to place the foundation directly on the bedrock.
Recognized for its ingenuity, Hat on the Ridge was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically integrates experience and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
