Qian Ling Lee's Courtyard House 39

Qian Ling Lee's Courtyard House 39 is a stunning three-storey semi-terrace house located in Gelugor, Penang, Malaysia. The design concept focuses on creating a harmonious interaction among natural lighting, time, materials, landscape, architecture, and space. The house features artistically placed openings to facilitate natural cross ventilation throughout the entire space, in line with the theme of Raw and Modern.

After studying the owner's requirements and site conditions, the design team transformed the semi-terrace house to personalize a dwelling that suits a family lifestyle. The house involves remodeling with partial demolition and rebuild, resulting in an open-plan concept with additional spaces such as a light well, an extra bedroom, and a functioning kitchen.

Renewable materials such as timber, red bricks, and concrete were used in the construction of the house. The design also integrates a dark wood cabinet as a partition into a raw concrete platform with red bricks, vent blocks, and ample skylight, creating a common leisure corner to encourage family interaction.

The project commenced in October 2020 and was completed in January 2021 in Penang, Malaysia. The design team's research led to the reorganization and reconfiguration of the internal spatial planning to introduce more daylighting, natural ventilation, and nature to enhance overall well-being.

Qian Ling Lee's Courtyard House 39 was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements.
