Discover the innovative salon design, Mook, by Takeshi Okuwada, located in the heart of Nakazakicho, Osaka, Japan, awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Takeshi Okuwada's Mook is a groundbreaking hair salon located in Nakazakicho, a town known for its terraced houses and low-rise apartments. The salon's design is a testament to the diversity of the community it serves, featuring untimbered oak panels that create an uneven yet captivating aesthetic. The space is strategically designed to blend with the gently-curved alleyways, reflecting the vibrant and diverse town it resides in.
The renovation of the building involved creating cavities to allow natural light to pass through, which are covered with oak panels to control and soften the light. This unique approach not only illuminates the salon but also adds a touch of natural beauty to the interior.
Embracing diversity and introducing light into the city center were the core research principles behind the design, resulting in a space that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings while offering a unique and inviting atmosphere for both customers and staff.
Despite the technical and creative challenges posed by working with uneven oak, the result is a space that exudes depth and warmth, creating a truly immersive experience for visitors. The salon's glass facade reflects the energy of the city, making the movement of people an integral part of the design.
With its operation commencing in April 2014 and completion in August 2015, Mook stands as a testament to Takeshi Okuwada's commitment to redefining spatial design and creating spaces that resonate with their surroundings.
