Nhi Ton's reconfigurable Mobius Pendant Lamp, a unique blend of Eastern and Western design principles, was exhibited at the AIA Architecture and Design Center in May 2019.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nhi Ton's Mobius Pendant Lamp is a stunning fusion of art and functionality, drawing inspiration from the Taoist principle of dynamic reconciliation of opposites, known as yin yang. The lamp elegantly combines solid and void, surface and depth, light and dark, and Eastern and Western influences, creating a beautiful yet practical piece of furniture.
The lampshade, made from a folded single flat sheet of paper covered in linen fabric, takes on the specific form of the Mobius Strip, representing the conscious and unconscious dimensions of human experience. The lamp's structure allows it to transform shape, engaging user interaction and providing a unique lighting experience.
This innovative design, a result of Nhi Ton's research and study on mountain and valley origami folds, was realized using a combination of simple existing hardware and CNC cut brass plates and discs for containing electrical parts. The lamp measures 610 mm x 305 mm x 1270 mm and can be used as a pendant light or a decorative statement piece, with users able to easily adjust the shape of the lampshade to fit their environment and preferences by rotating two triangle plates.
Nhi Ton's Mobius Pendant Lamp was the winner of the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020, recognized for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically combines experience and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
