Igor Kluin's Vaan R4: Redefining Luxury Yachting with Sustainability

Igor Kluin introduces the Vaan R4, a groundbreaking luxury sailing yacht crafted from recycled aluminium window frames, traffic signs, and license plates. This innovative approach makes the Vaan R4 a truly sustainable yacht, with a focus on recyclability at the end of its life. The use of circular materials, such as cork decking and upholstery from recycled cotton, further enhances its eco-friendly credentials.

The Vaan R4 is designed to offer an exhilarating sailing experience, luxurious comfort, and ample space while prioritizing sustainability. With a monohull-like styling in a catamaran form factor, it sets new standards for environmentally conscious yacht design.

Featuring a length of 1280 cm, width of 706 cm, height of 1950 cm, and weighing 11,000 kg, the Vaan R4 promises exceptional performance while minimizing its environmental impact.

Set to commence production in August 2019, the Vaan R4 is slated to hit the waters in early 2020, marking a significant milestone in sustainable luxury yachting.

Igor Kluin and Nienke van 't Klooster lead the design and styling efforts, ensuring that the Vaan R4 embodies the perfect blend of sustainability, performance, and elegance.

The Vaan R4 challenges conventional norms in yacht design, embracing sustainable materials and innovative solutions to create a unique and environmentally friendly sailing experience. Its open transom and helm positions at the back offer enhanced contact with the water, elevating the thrill of sailing and optimizing performance.

With the Vaan R4, Igor Kluin aims to demonstrate the feasibility of building luxury yachts from recycled materials without compromising on performance. Extensive research and collaboration with suppliers have been pivotal in ensuring the product's sustainability and performance meet and exceed industry standards.

Despite facing challenges associated with sustainable material use in yacht design, Igor Kluin leveraged these limitations to drive creativity, resulting in a design that stands out for its unique solutions and eco-friendly approach.

The Vaan R4's minimalist design, inspired by modern sleek monohulls and racing sailing yachts, offers active sailors a direct connection with the water, both during sailing and at anchor. The recycled aluminium building material, showcased in the matte aluminium 'targa roll-bar,' not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also provides shelter during rough weather conditions.

Recognized for its exceptional design and sustainability, the Vaan R4 has been honored with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Yacht and Marine Vessels Design category, underscoring its practicality, innovation, and positive contribution to the yachting industry.
