Ancient Egyptian Mythology Inspires Hisham El Essawy's Khepri Lighting Unit
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hisham El Essawy, the founder of HEDS, introduces Khepri, a floor lamp and pendant inspired by the ancient Egyptian myth of the scarab god, Khepri. The design is a contemporary representation of the scarab's role in bringing light from darkness, featuring a touch sensor switch for adjustable brightness.
Designed by HEDS in Cairo, Khepri embodies the evolution of the Egyptian scarab shape, with a dimmable LED and touch sensor switch. The floor lamp stands at 1500mm with a base diameter of 500mm, while the pendant light measures 700mm in height with a base diameter of 300mm. Both are equipped with a 200mm Khepri lighting fixture made of metal and glass, available in black and various colors. The 14W LED bulb provides a warm 2700K temperature and a maximum brightness of 1521 lumens, with a CRI of 85 and a lifespan of approximately 15,000 hours.
Khepri's design is a fusion of ancient Egyptian beliefs and modern style, presenting a functional and symbolic lighting unit that pays homage to the mythological scarab god. The project was realized from 15th February 2021 to 20th March 2021 at HEDS Design Studio in Cairo, Egypt. Khepri was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2021, recognizing its exceptional creativity and technical excellence.
