Discover the award-winning Slope House designed by Kyungsik Kim, an architectural masterpiece located in Wonju city, South Korea, blending seamlessly with the mountainous topography.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kyungsik Kim's Slope House is a stunning residence nestled in the mountainous topography of Wonju city, South Korea. The design concept was inspired by the gentle slope of the Kam-ak mountain near the site, with the roof serving as a metaphor for the mountain's slope.
The house features a unique sloped surface that doubles as both the roof and facade, providing a strong visual impact to residents and visitors. The sculpted out terrace on the roof offers a breathtaking view of the eastern mountain throughout the year, making it a standout feature of the design.
Constructed using zinc panel, brick, and corten steel, the dark-colored zinc roof contrasts with the light gray brick wall, creating a visually striking composition. The use of zinc as the roof finish ensures durability against the harsh winter weather, while corten steel acts as an accent material, bridging the two finish materials.
The project, which commenced in May 2019 and concluded in March 2020, spans a gross built area of 187m2 across two floors. Despite the challenges posed by the harsh winter weather, the compact volume of the project stands as a testament to the designer's innovative solutions.
Kyungsik Kim, an Assistant Professor at Yeonsung University Department of Architecture and the principal of Studio EON, brings a wealth of professional experience and expertise to the design, holding a Master of Architecture from MIT Graduate School of Architecture and Planning. His outstanding work has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021, showcasing remarkable expertise and innovation in architectural design.
