Introducing "Scent," a groundbreaking essential oil packaging design by Jia-Rong Chang and Shu-Shan Tsai, aimed at redefining Taiwan's souvenir industry with a unique sensory experience.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jia-Rong Chang and Shu-Shan Tsai have unveiled "Scent," an innovative essential oil packaging design that aims to revolutionize Taiwan's souvenir industry. Inspired by Taiwan's rich cultural history and natural landscapes, the designers sought to create a product that captures the essence of Taiwan through scent, offering international tourists a unique and immersive experience.
The "Scent" design utilizes diffuser stones made of gypsum and pigment, glass essential oil bottles with plastic caps, and matte plastic outer boxes, hardcover cartons, sponge, and art paper for the packaging. The diffuser stone allows users to drop essential oils and observe the winding patterns, creating a simultaneous memory in two senses - smell and sight.
The project, which commenced in Taichung, Taiwan in August 2021, was completed in April 2022 and exhibited in Taipei, Taiwan in June 2022. The design process involved extensive research, including scent chemical extraction experiments, daily life observations, and repeated revisions to idealize Taiwan's unique smelling characteristics.
Chang and Tsai's "Scent" design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence. The designers, known for their interest in sensual design and problem-solving, have successfully created a product that introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder, redefining the souvenir industry in Taiwan.
