Ancient Greek Jar Inspired Public Trash Can Design

Nikolaos Baskozos introduces Pithos, a public trash can design inspired by ancient Greek terracotta jars. The design aims to repurpose traditional forms, infusing them with contemporary functionality. The litter bin design is based on the form of an ancient Greek terracotta jar, utilizing fiber reinforced cementitious mortar for enhanced replication. The design subtly references the ancient form while incorporating modern materials and technology.

The Pithos litter bin measures 660mmx660mmx931mm and features a stainless steel lid and fiber reinforced concrete construction. The design includes an iron ring for attaching the bin bag, with a shutter to seal the waste hole and prevent rainwater from entering the bin. The project, which began as part of a Pan-Hellenic Street Furniture Competition for the Dodecanese islands in 2018, has evolved into a series of street furniture designs.

Nikolaos Baskozos, a registered architect based in Athens, Greece, studied at the University of Patras and has been working in architecture since 2012. The Pithos design was honored with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2019, recognizing its innovative blend of history, functionality, and modern design principles.
