THAD's renovation of Yuanbo Building in Zhuhai creates a vibrant and interactive space for Beijing Normal University's Zhuhai Campus, promoting communication and sustainability.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THAD's renovation of the Yuanbo Building in Zhuhai, completed in May 2020, has revitalized the campus of Beijing Normal University. The renovation respects the original structure, creating a continuous loop of stairs and corridors that connect the roofs, courtyards, and indoor spaces, fostering social interactions and idea exchange. The building now hosts various activities, from exhibitions to performances, and aligns with modern educational concepts.
The renovation incorporated innovative technologies such as a dry-hanging brick wall system for the facade, a glass roof for the atrium, and a new window casing system to control sunlight. The building's sustainable performance was also improved through measures to enhance the heat and light environment, including natural ventilation and sunlight optimization. The project's success lies in the careful balance between meeting new needs and conserving costs, achieved through thorough research, post-use evaluations, and software simulations.
THAD's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the landscape design, where existing trees were preserved, and terraces were built around them. The lighting system was also carefully integrated, considering the original handrails and electricity supply. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding and creative design that contributes to improving the quality of life.
