DONG QI Unveils "Xicang Market" Book, a Unique Presentation of Xi'an's Vanishing Market Culture
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DONG QI unveils "Xicang Market," a book capturing the essence of the disappearing urban market in Xi'an, China. The book showcases the vibrant civil life, handwritten signs, and the unique relationship between people and objects, offering a glimpse into the vanishing market culture.
The book is a unique presentation that aims to minimize design and restore the marketplace scene through eight independent chapters, reflecting the elements of a local market. Each chapter portrays the location, market, signs, stalls, oral accounts, goods, price, and vendors, providing a comprehensive view of the market's vivid culture.
Measuring 185mm x 55mm x 240mm, the book features raw, locally sourced materials and unmodified, handwritten portraits, reflecting the authentic essence of the market. The project, which commenced in April 2015 and concluded in August 2018, was exhibited at the Xi'an Urban Memory Museum in October 2018, inviting vendors, local residents, and government officials for a firsthand experience.
The "Xicang Market" book received the Silver A' Design Award in 2019, recognizing its exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and innovative approach in preserving the cultural heritage of Xi'an's urban markets.
