BIAS Architects & Associates reimagined the Taiwan Design Expo as an urban event in Hsinchu, Taiwan, from November 1st to 11th, 2020, to showcase a new narrative for the city, integrating both historical and modern elements.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BIAS Architects & Associates, in collaboration with the Taiwan Design Research Institute & Grand Vision, curated a strategic set of interventions to transform the Taiwan Design Expo into an urban event in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The Expo, hosted by the city with a vibrant Science Park and over 300 years of history, aimed to bring new energy to the design sector in relation to various fields of industry, society, and culture.
The Expo operated as a 2km-long line of events and temporary exhibition spaces, delivering a new narrative for the city and touring citizens and visitors across various areas. The strategic interventions included a 'performance route,' playgrounds, iconic large-scale inflatable sculptures, and a digital orientation system through a smartphone app. Additionally, a shuttle bus was created to offer better accessibility to all.
With a total exhibition area of 410,000 sqm, the Expo aimed to make people concretely experience the various aspects of the city's culture and trigger a change in their perspective towards the urban space. The project involved extensive research on the city of Hsinchu, key stakeholders, and the temporary revitalization of public space, overcoming challenges related to political implications and stakeholder involvement.
