Retro Song of New York: Blending Vintage and Modern Styles

Benson Wu's Retro Song of New York is a residential house design project that beautifully combines warm vintage industrial style with a modern grand style, creating a unique and compelling living space that reflects the individualism of its owners. The project draws inspiration from the memories of New York, incorporating the unique experiences and stories of the homeowners into the design. By combining warm vintage industrial style with a modern grand style, the design represents the compromise and tolerance of the two owners, resulting in a space that exudes warmth and character.

The project involved addressing various challenges, including fragmented layout, disordered plumbing and electrical layout, an enclosed kitchen, and a large pillar at the entrance without proper shade. The designer overcame these challenges by removing interior partition walls, rearranging the layout and space ratio, and emphasizing the comfort of the public space. The living room and dining room feature no ceiling, with the bare walls painted in dark grey to heighten and extend the ceiling, creating a sense of spaciousness. Dark wood patterns and overlapping floor fields blur the space division, while the use of leather furniture and textures of wood materials, iron pieces, and metals add visual interest and warmth to the space.

Furthermore, the design promotes family and parent-child interactions, with the enclosed kitchen being replaced by a sliding door to prevent cooking smells from entering the public area. The kitchen island, strategically placed facing the corridor and dining room, allows the female owner to interact with the family while cooking. The overall design reflects the integration of space styles favored by the two owners, creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
