The River Runs Through is a large-scale public art installation located at 80 Game Street Merbein, Victoria, Australia. Inspired by the Murray River and the unique landscape of the Australian outback, this project aims to reinvigorate an old unused area into a new shared public space through the beauty of large-scale public art. The artwork is permanently displayed for the public, offering a dynamic experience both during the day and night.

The River Runs Through: Transforming an Unused Space with Public Art
The River Runs Through, a public art project led by Beck Storer, is a testament to the power of community investment and innovative design. The artwork covers over 350 square meters and combines traditional mural painting with innovative digital printing, creating a unique visual experience for visitors. The project was fully funded by the Merbein community, raising over $30,000 during a challenging year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
At night, the artwork is powered by solar panels, transforming into a colorful light installation that adds a new dimension to the space. The project also includes a series of communication assets such as a website, social media strategy, interpretative signage, and printed promotional materials to promote the area as a major public art tourist attraction.
Challenges arose during the project, including the need to clean and prepare the surface of the old refrigerated storage shed where the artwork is displayed. However, through intensive cleaning processes and innovative techniques, the team overcame these obstacles to bring the vision to life.
