FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tao Rocking Chair by Hsu-Hung Huang

Inspired by the craft of the Tao, an indigenous people of Taiwan, the Tao Rocking Chair embodies the maritime culture of the region. Through a blend of traditional and contemporary methods, this furniture design aims to showcase and preserve the unique oceanic culture and spirit of Taiwan's indigenous people.

Taiwan's diverse cultural heritage, particularly that of the indigenous nations, is encapsulated in this piece. Crafted from Ash, Oak, and Beech, the chair's dimensions of 1300mm in length, 500mm in width, and 900mm in height, with a seat height of 450mm, reflect the designer's meticulous attention to detail.

The Tao Rocking Chair project commenced in May 2017 in London and concluded in September 2017, with subsequent exhibitions at Viaduct Showroom London, Goldsmith University London, and Eslite Bookstore Taiwan in July 2018 and 2019.

Reflecting the traditional boat-building methods of the Tao Indigenous community, the chair's construction presents a unique set of challenges that the designer has skillfully overcome. By mirroring the traditional boat building method and considering the mechanical characteristics of various wood species, the chair's structure is durable and resistant to deformation caused by changes in environmental humidity.

Hsu-Hung Huang, a product and interior designer, holds a Master of Arts (Merit) in Product & Furniture Design from Kingston University in London, England. With a passion for preserving and transforming cultural heritage, Huang aims to bridge the gap between the world and Taiwan's culture through contemporary designs.
