University of Lisbon's Research Group Introduces Sim One, a Breakthrough in Tsunami Early Warning Systems

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sim One: Tsunami Monitoring Device

A research group from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, comprising He Li, Nankai Cheng, and Li Yang, has developed "Sim One," a revolutionary tsunami monitoring device. Inspired by the shape of Aeoliscus strigatus, this device is designed to decrease the likelihood of marine disasters such as tsunamis caused by climate change and rising sea levels. The bright yellow color ensures visibility against the marine background.

Tsunamis can cause tens of thousands of casualties due to the lack of direct detection equipment. Sim One monitors the internal dynamics of the ocean in real-time, directly detecting tsunamis with high warning accuracy. Anchored in the open sea by offshore work vessels, the device is fixed with special ropes and can dive up to 150 meters with a maximum speed of 20 km/h and a range of 100 km.

The project, which started in February 2020 in China and concluded on January 27th, 2023, in Lisbon, provides a theoretical basis for the new design, mapping tsunami propagation properties, and discovering critical points for tsunami monitoring. The system aims to reduce the threat of marine disasters to coastal residents and extract comprehensive ocean state data for better understanding of the oceans.
