Scottie Chih-Chieh Huang (TW) Unveils Volta, a Stunning Coffee Table Design Inspired by the Rib Vault of Cathedrals
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Renowned designer Scottie Chih-Chieh Huang (TW) introduces Volta, a captivating coffee table design inspired by the rib vault of cathedrals. This alternative coffee table design aims to interpret the visual appeal and beauty of arched structures from a human perspective, offering a unique blend of form and function.
Volta's standout feature lies in its frame form, composed of cross or diagonal arched ribs, which serve as the basis for exploring the structural lines and shapes of the object. The table legs are designed to mimic the arched structure columns, while special arc-shaped steel plates form the support structure of the tabletop, creating a visually striking and structurally sound piece.
Utilizing stainless steel and half-reflecting glass, Volta measures 480mmW x 480mmD x 430mmH, offering a perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality. The design also incorporates a unique lighting installation, allowing the table to transform into a captivating piece of art in the night lighting mode, projecting the beauty of arched buildings into the indoor environment through the refraction and reflection between its inside light source and the half-reflective glass.
Scottie Chih-Chieh Huang (TW) embarked on the Volta project in June 2012 at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, USA, and completed it in April 2015 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The design has been showcased at prestigious events such as Salone del Mobile in Italy, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and FORMOSA Sculpture Biennial in Taiwan, garnering attention for its innovative approach to blending architectural inspiration with functional design.
Volta's realization technology involves a meticulous process, with the initial version utilizing a metal sculpture approach to manually bend and weld steel bars for the main structure. The improved version incorporates CAD and CNC technology to precisely cut steel plates, ensuring accuracy and feasibility in manufacturing.
Scottie Chih-Chieh Huang (TW) has secured the copyrights for Volta, showcasing his dedication to innovation and creativity in the design realm. His extensive background as an award-winning artist, designer, and educator underscores the depth of expertise and vision behind the Volta project.
