Misako Niwa's Tsumugu "Changing Picture Floor Cushion" is a modern take on traditional Japanese patterns, offering warmth and versatility.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Misako Niwa's Tsumugu "Changing Picture Floor Cushion" draws inspiration from the origami picture-changing box and traditional Japanese Kurume Tsumugi patterned cloth. The cushion features a unique mechanism that allows users to switch between three different patterns by pulling it from the middle, offering a blend of modern functionality with traditional aesthetics.
The cushion's material, Kurume Kasuri, is a traditional craft that provides a warm texture and unique Japanese patterns, making it suitable for various modern settings. The combination of texture and taste evokes the warmth of Japan's beautiful seasons, offering a carefree and comfortable lifestyle.
The cushion's hexagonal return shape and folding mechanism allow for a seamless transition between the different patterns, creating an engaging and interactive experience. The Kurume Kasuri fabric, known for its ikat weaving technique, adds depth and cultural significance to the design, while the core material of urethane foam ensures durability and comfort.
With a diameter of 400mm and a thickness of 60mm, the cushion offers a practical and versatile seating solution for modern living spaces. Its elastic and comfortable nature encourages users to engage with it, providing a unique tactile experience.
Misako Niwa's Tsumugu "Changing Picture Floor Cushion" was completed as a research project for graduation, with the first prototype manufactured in November 2015. The design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2017, highlighting its innovative and practical approach to traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
