Introducing Fresh, a mobile application designed to combat food waste by tracking and managing the shelf life of food items in refrigerators, providing users with valuable insights to reduce waste.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Deyin Zhang å¼ å¾·å¯ introduces "Fresh," a mobile application aimed at addressing the global issue of food waste. With an estimated 1.3 billion tons of food worth about 1 trillion U.S. dollars being discarded annually, Fresh offers a solution to this problem by helping users manage their food inventory and reduce waste.
The app tracks the shelf life of food items and utilizes color-coded prompts to distinguish between items with different shelf lives, thereby reminding users to consume them before they expire. Furthermore, Fresh provides weekly reports on wasted food and cumulative statistics to educate users about sustainable consumption and reducing food waste.
Developed for both IOS and Android platforms, Fresh allows users to scan supermarket shopping lists to record their purchases and subsequently add these items to the app. By doing so, users can effectively monitor the shelf life of their food and receive timely reminders to prevent wastage.
The project, which commenced in January 2022 in Hangzhou, China, is still under development. It is based on extensive research, including interviews with Chinese community residents and discussions with design students at Zhejiang University, to understand consumer behavior and attitudes towards food consumption and waste.
Fresh has been recognized for its innovative approach and practicality, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 in the category of Sustainable Products, Projects, and Green Design. This award acknowledges the app's contribution to addressing a critical social and environmental issue through a well-designed and innovative solution.
