Asya Demidova's "Same But Different" project explores the conversion of smell into physical forms, offering a unique sensory experience through art and technology.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Asya Demidova's "Same But Different" project delves into the complexity of human senses, particularly the chemistry behind smells. The project aims to provide a tangible experience of smell through visual interpretation, utilizing two distinct approaches.
The first approach involves creating forms that encapsulate two relevant smells, requiring the molecular representation of these smells to be placed together to form a shape. The second approach utilizes still-life layouts based on the chemical arrangements of the smells, contrasting their juxtaposition.
The forms were 3D printed and coated with holographic paint layers, emphasizing the duality of the preserved smells. Each form, around 12-15cm, contains internal chambers with absorbent materials to preserve the smell, connected to the exterior through thin conduits for diffusion.
The project, which started in January 2017 in Moscow and concluded after five months, was exhibited in the "Reveal" show in June 2017. Asya Demidova's research focused on unique pairs of chemical substances with the same formula but different smells, confirmed through collaboration with perfumers and chemists.
Asya Demidova's "Same But Different" project was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, recognizing its innovative and practical approach that integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
