Discover the inspiration, unique properties, and realization technology behind Cultura, a groundbreaking wall tile design by Gabriel Costa
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Renowned architect Gabriel Costa introduces Cultura, a revolutionary concrete wall tile design inspired by the ancient pre-Columbian Jama Coaque culture of Ecuador. The design is a tribute to the distinctive shapes and artistic heritage of this ancient civilization, known for their innovative use of roller stamps to create intricate motifs on various surfaces.
Cultura's uniqueness lies in its seamless tiling approach, utilizing two distinct pieces - tiles A and B - each featuring a unique design. By making tile B a mirror image of tile A and rotating both tiles 180 degrees, two additional tiles, labeled C and D, were produced. This innovative approach allows for a diverse array of configurations without repetition, echoing the roller stamp patterns of the Jama Coaque culture.
The manufacturing technique involved the use of wet-cast high-performance concrete in thermoformed plastic molds crafted over an engineered aluminum routed matrix to ensure stable dimensions and a sleek semi-gloss texture finish. The resulting product boasts dimensions of 250mm width, 10mm depth, and 600mm height, with a material composition of SSC/GRC and a semi-gloss finish.
