Teruo Miyahara's Light Welling House

Teruo Miyahara's Light Welling House, a residence for a single family, stands as a testament to innovative design within the constraints of a small, narrow site in Tokyo. The project, which commenced in April 2004 and concluded in May 2005, was designed to address the challenge of bringing natural light into the residence due to its positioning in a residential area with limited natural lighting opportunities.

The house's unique features include a staircase designed as a path of light to distribute natural light to each room, and concrete exterior walls coated with lean mix acrylic paint, resulting in a striking mottled effect. Additionally, the interior was finished in white to maximize the use of natural light.

Teruo Miyahara, along with Akira Ouchi, carefully calculated the altitude of the winter sun to position the stairs and designed all furniture, storage, and kitchen sets to maintain the purity of the house's design. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that contributes to quality of life improvements.

The Light Welling House is a stunning example of how innovative design can overcome spatial limitations, creating a residence that not only maximizes natural light but also embodies the essence of urban living.
