Toast Sofa: Extending Product Lifespan and Reducing Furniture Waste

Tian Chen&Hao Wu presents the groundbreaking Toast Sofa, a sustainable furniture solution designed to combat the growing issue of furniture waste. The sofa's innovative design allows for tool-free assembly and easy disassembly, utilizing smaller modular units to extend its service life, reduce maintenance costs, and minimize furniture waste. The Toast Sofa perfectly blends modularity, practicality, and eco-friendly concepts, meeting the diverse needs of modern consumers.

The solid wood base, treated with food-grade environmentally friendly wood wax oil, ensures strength and durability. Metal fittings, CNC machined from stainless steel, and elastic knitted fabrics in a wide range of colors contribute to the sofa's interchangeability and comfort. With dimensions of 1920mm*1000mm*770mm, the Toast Sofa offers a versatile and sustainable seating solution for contemporary living spaces.

The project, initiated in September 2023 and completed in December 2023 in Hangzhou, China, involved extensive research into the challenges of furniture waste and the used furniture market. Through over a thousand online questionnaires, field visits, and interviews with relevant furniture enterprises, the design team identified the need for a sustainable solution to the costly repair and recycling of old furniture.
