Discover the Red Fort Visitor Centre, a Gateway to India's Heritage
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Red Fort Center, designed by SIDDHARTH BATHLA, offers a unique visitor orientation experience within the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site. The center's design draws inspiration from the historical significance of the Red Fort, seamlessly blending contemporary interventions with the fortress's multi-layered history. Through adaptive reuse, the long-defunct colonial barracks have been transformed into an engaging, historic, and immersive gallery space, spread across 20,000 sq.ft.
Rooted in local knowledge and material philosophy, the conservation efforts utilized lime, brick dust, jute, and Badarpur sand to replicate the fort's materiality. The Visitor Centre features engaging storytelling experiences, immersive technologies like AR, and curated museum spaces, ensuring equal engagement for all visitors through guided tours facilitated by ushers and live actors.
The project, which commenced in January 2019, faced challenges in integrating the monumental artifact with the heritage surroundings. However, the relentless efforts led to the creation of a living cultural space for Red Fort visitors. The Visitor Centre officially opened in January 2022, offering a complete introduction to the Red Fort's history and context, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking an immersive experience of India's rich heritage.
