Renowned designer Hikoko Ito debuts a transformative art installation, Happy Birthday Likeboxes, at the Chih Lo Lou Gallery on the 4th floor of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, aiming to foster community engagement and human connection through a unique interactive experience.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Inspired by the tradition of exchanging hand-drawn birthday cards, the art installation features 366 illuminated mailboxes, each representing a day of the year, encouraging visitors to reflect on digital interactions and share heartfelt wishes through personalized birthday cards.
The Likeboxes enable visitors to receive and create hand-drawn birthday cards, perpetuating a continuous chain of kindness. Adorned with intricate patterns, the installation invites participants to uncover hidden Chinese characters, transforming each visit into a journey of discoveries and special connections.
The project commenced in April 2023 and has garnered widespread acclaim, leading to an extension of the exhibition through January 2024, with a second exhibition anticipated to conclude on June 26th, 2024.
Rooted in the designer's family tradition, the installation celebrates the universally shared occasion of birthdays, promoting kindness and a pay-it-forward mindset within the community. The project has received the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award for its outstanding and creatively ingenious approach.
