Yi Sheng Chang's "Gift" project is a testament to the seamless fusion of vintage Taiwanese and classic Japanese styles, creating a timeless, cozy living space. By dismantling the wall between two rooms, the design allows more light to flood the space and inserts a TV wall to separate public and private areas, preventing the elongated space from feeling segmented. The project, completed in Hsinchu, Taiwan, features the client's prized collection of Taiwanesque raw wood and rattan furniture, while also showcasing innovative new-generation local furniture makers. The design is characterized by a basic color scheme that draws focus on the furniture and its details, setting a cozy vibe with wood and earthy colors.
The project, spanning 66 square meters, challenges conventional layouts by creating clear-cut private and public sections within the space. The public area is light-infused, open, and features a floor-to-ceiling window with a terrace view, while the private area offers multiple uses within an extended space. The design also incorporates handmade furniture from Taiwan's pluralistic colonial era, referencing vintage cultural elements to convey a classic rustic look. Notably, the project pays homage to Taiwan's carpentry and traditional craft, supporting young talents in the industry.
Yi Sheng Chang's "Gift" project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2024 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design, which authentically integrates experience and resourcefulness. The project showcases strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place through innovative design.
