Chun Yen Chen's House of Light Well is a Silver A' Design Award-winning project that reimagines a row house into a unique and inspiring living space.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chun Yen Chen's House of Light Well project breathes new life into a decades-old row house, transforming it into a captivating and diverse residence. The design draws inspiration from the original layout, aiming to enhance the diverse landscapes within the homes by extending them alongside the courtyard, turning it into a central space akin to an outdoor plaza.
The original row house, spanning about 30 meters, was divided into front and rear sections by a light well in the middle. While the original light well served the function of additional day-lighting, it was surrounded by negative spaces such as stairs and toilets. The redesign aims to let various family activities unfold beside the light well, creating a core space resembling an outdoor square. The closed staircase has been transformed into a light hanging around the light well, with all room access passing through this central space.
Chun Yen Chen's design also pays attention to the appearance treatment, maintaining the continuity and integrity of the facade of the entire row houses as much as possible. The addition of glass brick walls and terraces helps to create privacy and buffer noise and visual interference, while also enhancing the day-lighting in the bedroom space.
The House of Light Well project has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2024. This accolade highlights the exceptional expertise and innovation demonstrated in the design, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
