Discover the story behind the award-winning "Lotus" guest chair by Ming-Li Chang, inspired by the Ming Dynasty, and its unique design features.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ming-Li Chang's "Lotus" guest chair draws inspiration from a special Ming Dynasty folding chair, translating its iconic design into a modern space. The intersecting movement and ceremonial chair archetype are captured through a unique lap joint and contrasting finish, creating a one-of-a-kind design.
Designed to convey emotions of kindness, warmth, generosity, and pureness of heart, "Lotus" brings forth a translation of traditional Ming Dynasty chair design for contemporary settings. The chair is fully manufactured in China, utilizing traditional Chinese furniture wood joinery methods for a seamless, sturdy, and clean structure.
With dimensions of 530mm width, 550mm depth, 728mm height, and a seat height of 475mm, "Lotus" embodies the essence of Chinese culture and craftsmanship, offering a minimal yet impactful addition to any space.
Ming-Li Chang, hailing from Alhambra, United States, embarked on the "Lotus" project in October 2022 in Los Angeles, culminating in its completion in March 2023 in Shanghai. The design process involved overcoming challenges in communicating with manufacturers, particularly in prototyping and developing the structural joinery.
Recognized for its exceptional expertise and innovation, "Lotus" was honored with the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2024, showcasing its remarkable level of excellence and positive emotional impact.
