UnBespoke is a modular table accessory designed by Jeeyea Kim and W. Dorian Bybee, inspired by the Haberdasher Puzzle, and fabricated using Indiana limestone.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UnBespoke, a contemporary table top object, is a unique exploration of Indiana limestone as a material for modern design. Inspired by the Haberdasher Puzzle, the design features four triangulated stone pieces that can hold tea light candles or small-scale plants, allowing users to arrange them in various formations. The design process began in April 2019, with the first prototype fabricated in August 2019. UnBespoke was exhibited at the Museum of Evansville in January 2020.
Limestone, known for its beauty and durability, has been utilized for centuries in classical architecture. UnBespoke, however, reimagines this material for contemporary design objects. Using advanced 3D modeling and CNC fabrication, the designers have given limestone a renewed legitimacy as a decorative design object.
The small scale of the design presented challenges during fabrication, as the CNC facility was not accustomed to working with such small-scale objects. Despite this, the designers successfully convinced the facility to produce the pieces with extra care, resulting in the creation of UnBespoke.
Jeeyea Kim and W. Dorian Bybee, both from the United States, have demonstrated their expertise and innovation through UnBespoke, earning the design a Silver A' Design Award in 2020. This prestigious accolade recognizes the outstanding technical characteristics and artistic skill of the design, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and innovation.
