Yiying Tang's "Collective Ground" Redefines Affordable Housing for Japan's Aging Population
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yiying Tang's "Collective Ground" introduces a groundbreaking approach to affordable housing, addressing the challenges faced by Japan's aging population. The project, located in Senri New Town, Osaka, Japan, aims to revitalize the Aoyamadai community through innovative design and resource redistribution.
The concept involves introducing rentable spaces within the community, encompassing both public areas and individual units. By offering rentable public spaces, additional communal areas are created to attract and serve visitors and existing residents, and by offering independent rooms within the units, owners have the option to use them personally or rent them out for additional income.
In terms of structural considerations, the project implements load-bearing concrete components and glass curtains to create a more flexible commercial space, resulting in the establishment of a non-column system. The upper floors utilize a steel structure for the residential units.
The land's gentle slope is integrated with a pocket landscape system, creating a versatile playground for all ages. Each pocket park has its theme, designed for outdoor activities and relaxation, encouraging people to stay and enjoy the space.
Commercial spaces available for rent occupy the programming of the first floor, featuring curvilinear landscapes and playground systems. The second to fourth floors encompass rented offices, amenity spaces for residents, and units with independent rooms. The fifth to ninth floors house typical units.
The project, completed in 2020, was inspired by the need to address the challenges of Japan's aging population and declining birth rate. Tang's innovative approach to affordable housing has earned her the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2024, recognizing the project's practical and innovative design that meets professional and industrial requirements.
Yiying Tang, a visionary architect from Jersey City, United States, is known for her exceptional skill in architectural design across a wide spectrum.
