Breaking Boundaries: Blue Bay Residential by Shen Likun

Renowned designer Shen Likun introduces the Blue Bay Residential project, a groundbreaking townhouse design inspired by the traditional Hainan living pattern. The project, located in Lingshui, Hainan, covers a total land area of 52,000 sqm and a construction area of 25,000 sqm, with 122 meticulously designed households. The construction began in June 2021 and is expected to be completed by December 2023.

Derived from the blurred boundaries in traditional Hainan residential patterns, the design incorporates a unique plane organization in the shape of Hui, a Chinese character with an enclosing shape. The living rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, embracing the scattered porous layout that aligns with the hot and windy climate of the region. The double first floor concept breaks the spatial certainty between the inside and outside at different elevations, offering a fresh perspective on residential architecture.

The design's unique properties lie in its integration of architecture with nature, breaking through the traditional architectural constraints to form a romantic rural style. The project's composition, dominated by horizontal lines and strips, creates a metaphor with the spacious golf course and the South China Sea, offering a harmonious blend of city and countryside living.

The project's realization technology addresses the challenges posed by the tropical monsoon climate, incorporating a prefabricated slope roof system to ensure optimal shading and privacy needs between the units. The space sequence, composed of a lobby-courtyard-hall-corridor, creates a complete north-south air passage, effectively regulating the overall wind environment.

Shen Likun's design team, including Liang Yanwei and Cheng Lingyan, has meticulously combined traditional living patterns with modern green architecture design methods, aiming to establish a new dialogue between the city and the countryside in the regional and contemporary context.

The innovative design, winner of the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, reflects the designer's commitment to creating a new living experience that responds to the local climate and traditional living habits, offering a unique architectural model at the junction of city and nature.

Shen Likun, a national first-class registered architect and a first-line architect, has focused on urban planning and architecture design topics for many years.
