Oita Soho: A Fusion of Aesthetic and Cultural Elements

Mika Kanayama's Oita Soho is a modern Japanese restaurant that beautifully fuses aesthetic and cultural elements, creating a sophisticated and relaxing space with Japanese influences. Inspired by the Tanizaki essay "In Praise of Shadows," the design embraces darkness and shadows in Japanese art, design, and architecture. The space required unconventional approaches to deliver a distinct, remarkable experience, incorporating backlit paper parasols and careful, muted lighting throughout.

The Grade II listed building features fire retardant timber and veneered oak MDF, and spans across 67sqm on the ground floor and 69sqm on the first floor. The design is located in London and was completed in January 2023.

Oita Soho's unique features include the use of backlit paper parasols in a flowing pattern, creating a feature wall that surprises and delights visitors. The warm light of the parasols is accentuated in the dark, while carefully positioned lighting and mirrored surfaces add to the glow and mystery of the space. The design is abundant with plants and botanical imagery, evoking the feeling of an exotic night garden or conservatory.

As the winner of the Silver A' Design Award in 2024, Oita Soho stands as a testament to Mika Kanayama's exceptional expertise and innovation in interior space design. The design studio, Muzo, founded by Kanayama in 2018, specializes in creating enriching interior spaces for hospitality, restaurants, bars, cinemas, and hotels, with a focus on inspiring and invigorating day-to-day life.
