Architect John Kanakas unveils House Symbiosis, a double residency project located in Athens, Greece, completed in 2023, designed to foster close bonds while preserving individual privacy.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
House Symbiosis, a double residency designed by architect John Kanakas, is a unique project aimed at accommodating two sibling families seeking to foster close bonds while preserving individual privacy. The project, located in a residential neighborhood in Athens, Greece, was completed in early 2019 after a long planning period and construction amidst the pandemic, finishing around the end of 2022 with final touches in early 2023. The design emphasizes familial bonds and offers a nuanced balance between communal and individual living, addressing the evolving demands of contemporary living.
The project gained inspiration from the yacht, aerospace, and automotive industries, with the aim of creating a statement of freedom. The design's sculptural tectonic approach and curvilinear formal language impart a sense of dynamism and motion to the living spaces, creating the impression of a structure floating between the sky and sea. The delicate equilibrium between privacy and socialization for the two families was a primary challenge, addressed through architectural experimentation with geometry, spatial orientation, facades, and volumetric massing.
House Symbiosis is a double residency, with a total housing area of 440 sqm, accommodating two sibling families seeking to foster close bonds while preserving individual privacy. The project's unique L-shaped plan and environmental conscious attitude to architecture allow for external communal areas for socialization as well as greenery. The main structure was raised level by level through various types of wooden formworks for concrete casting, with a main sculptural element of the project being a ribbon-like geometry with parts of double curvature, requiring a detailed formworking procedure for construction.
