A Community Activity Center Designed to Preserve History and Inspire Future Development
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Located at the entrance of Feiyue Village, the Stone White project by Minjie Si reimagines a ruined stone house as a vibrant community activity center. Completed during the pandemic, the project involved the preservation of the original structure while integrating new functions, showcasing a balance between tradition and innovation. The design also embraces the existing natural elements, incorporating steel-tube-supported stairs around two trees, guiding visitors to a new platform above the original structure.
The project, realized with a light steel structure and preserved stone walls, stands as a testament to community resilience and ingenuity. Through a participatory process, local villagers contributed to the construction using low-tech methods, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and inclusive development. The design's emphasis on reusing existing traces and envisioning future rural culture buildings reflects a deep understanding of the context and a dedication to stimulating both villagers and visitors.
Stone White, completed in November 2019 in Beijing and later in Feiyue Village, Hubei Province, represents a delicate balance between strategy and form, built and preserved, and immediacy and evolutionary instinct. The project's successful realization amidst creative, technical, and research challenges underscores its significance as a symbol of community strength and forward-thinking design.
