K11 Art Mall: Redefining Retail Experience

Carrie Ho's innovative approach has transformed the 20-year-old department store into an 'art mall' that is a shopaholic’s dream, with every inch of space being utilized to provide an 'Easter egg' type of surprise in every corner. The mall boasts a sci-fi-inspired blue technology chamber, pop-up stores, and seasonal themes throughout, making it a star attraction in the K11 brand’s portfolio.

The K11 Wuhan mall has been a huge success since its opening, proving that bricks-and-mortar retail can thrive with the right amenity-driven design, an inherent sense of fun, and an eye on the future. Verticality was a key concept behind the retail planning, encouraging visitors to explore upwards by strategically placing vertical landmarks and floor-specific landmarks throughout the mall. The mall also connects to the adjacent mall via an external bridge, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The renovation utilized steel structure to create additional layers in the building, while fiberglass-reinforced gypsum and laminated glass were used to create colorful spaces. The total area of the mall is 34,000 sq.m. spread across 4 levels of podium levels.

The project, located in Wuhan, China, was closed down for renovation from 2014 to 2020. The design team overcame the challenge of converting an old department store with constraints from the existing built structure, resulting in a remarkable transformation that has garnered international acclaim.

Carrie Ho's exceptional design for the K11 Art Mall has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2023, reflecting the designer's prodigy and wisdom in creating a trendsetting retail space that significantly impacts the world with its desirable characteristics.
