Award-winning designer Yu-Hsiang, Su transforms an old metal factory into a multifunctional commercial space
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Award-winning designer Yu-Hsiang, Su, in collaboration with Wei-Hung Wang, has repurposed an old metal factory in Taichung, Taiwan, into a multifunctional commercial space named Re48 Storehouse. The project, which began in January 2022 and was completed in April 2022, is a testament to the trend of preserving historical industrial spaces while integrating modern elements.
The Re48 Storehouse spans 443 m2 and houses a cafe, gallery, tile showroom, and design studio. The design approach focused on preserving the original features of the factory, such as ultra-high ceilings, exposed rough metal structures, and industrial machinery, while incorporating new interior structures. The open space design promotes idea exchange, creating a collaborative and creative environment.
Utilizing a timber framework and special lighting techniques, the design team created a multilayer visual effect, maintaining the factory's unique characteristics. The space also features a 14-meter-long coffee bar reminiscent of a factory assembly line, divided into three sections for different purposes. Additionally, the design includes a gallery on the second floor, allowing visitors to experience the history of the old metal factory while enjoying artwork and live music.
Yu-Hsiang, Su's design philosophy emphasizes the use of local culture and materials, incorporating a diverse range of materials while preserving the unique characteristics of each project. The Re48 Storehouse project received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically combines experience and resourcefulness.
