Chao Zhou's Homestay Project Reimagines Traditional Quadrangle in Northern China
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
United Practice Architecture's Chao Zhou has reimagined a historical building in Shihuyu Village, Jiuduhe Town, Huairou, Beijing, China, creating The Peach Garden Hostel. The project, completed in 2019, is a stunning example of architectural rebirth, blending old and new to provide accommodation, social functions, and floristry in a reconstructed traditional quadrangle.
The project's unique approach respects the historical building while integrating innovative strategies to meet modern functional needs and improve guest wellbeing. The reconstruction preserved the original timber structure and stone walls, while incorporating sustainable light construction techniques to achieve high quality at a low cost.
The design team overcame challenges such as limited space and the need to minimize the impact of newly built parts on the historical building. The result is a seamless blend of old and new, with a transparent interface that allows nature to permeate the space, offering guests stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Great Wall.
