Meta Zen: Redefining Tactile Meditation with Transformative Design

Meta Zen, designed by Yumeng Li, is a poetic playset and interior decor crafted to bring Zen principles to life through tactile meditation. The design draws inspiration from Zen and Daoism, embodying simplicity, grace, and tranquility. With its reconfigurable modules and transformative capabilities, Meta Zen offers a unique approach to fostering inner peace and creativity in adults.

One of the key strengths of Meta Zen lies in its minimalistic forms, which allow the modules to seamlessly create dynamic sand patterns, from small table objects to entire facade decorations, instantly transforming any space into a Zen sanctuary. The inclusion of magnets in the modular panels enhances accessibility, making it user-friendly for individuals with visual impairments or hand tremors.

Furthermore, the design's commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of biodegradable materials and natural fibers, ensuring both environmental friendliness and a visually appealing aesthetic. The patented ridges and valleys geometrically express Zen principles, providing a hygienic and versatile setup that encourages creativity and replayability.

Yumeng Li's Meta Zen has received widespread acclaim for its ability to facilitate self-meditation and stress relief, promoting inner balance through playful interaction. Its inclusive design, featuring guided magnetic assembly and tactile patterns, offers a multisensory and accessible experience for users of all ages and abilities. Launched in December 2021 and completed in July 2022, Meta Zen was initially developed during the pandemic to alleviate anxiety for individuals living in collective quarantine settings. The project has since received numerous accolades, including the European Product Design Award and the International Design Awards in 2022, as well as being selected as a finalist in the Product and User Experience categories of the iF Design Award in 2023. It has also been featured in prominent design publications, such as Yanko Design and Puxiang Design.
