The iconic Tsinghua EE Building underwent a renovation project to better reflect the culture and spirit of the Department of Electronic Engineering, celebrating its 70th anniversary.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Tsinghua EE Building, a landmark at Tsinghua University, underwent a renovation project to renew its space and better showcase the culture and spirit of the Department of Electronic Engineering. The renovation project, which started in November 2020 and finished in July 2022, aimed to convey the Department's inclusive educational philosophy, its exploring spirit in scientific research, and its profound history through space. The project location was Tsinghua Electronic Engineering Building, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.
The renovation took "energy transmission" as the design concept, utilizing the history, culture, technology, and information of the Department as the source of "energy." The project mainly focused on renovating the public space on 1F, 2F, 5F, and 6F, offering functions such as department identity display, reception and communication, seminar and salon, department history exhibition, and technology exhibition. The total area of this renovation project is 1,767 sqm.
The space renovation strategy involved opening the closed, negative surfaces in the space and subtly inserting "E cubes" throughout the space to accommodate varied functions such as exhibition, reception, seminar, resting, and solitude. The project also transformed the original form of columns and ceilings, utilizing aluminum plates and lighting to create a sense of technology. Glass, wood, and steel were mixed to communicate the temperament of sci-tech research institutes.
The biggest challenge faced during the renovation was to show humanistic care, historical repository, and the spirit of scientific research through space renovation, influencing users' behaviors positively. Another challenge was to ensure the normal operation of teaching and research activities during construction. The COVID-19 pandemic also slowed down the construction progress.
Materials and images were used to highlight a technological atmosphere in the lobby, while the curved area on 5F was designed for exchanges and encounters between faculty and students. 6F consists of areas for exhibition and alumni salon, exhibiting the Department's long history and its spirit in sci-tech innovation through space renovation, interactive installations, and visual design.
The project was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design Award in 2024, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation.
