Moon Jung Chang unveils her mfa thesis project, Hybrid Beauty, a modern couture womenswear collection, exhibited at FIT museum and showcased during New York Fashion Week S/S 2020.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Moon Jung Chang's Hybrid Beauty collection is a convergence of dualism, cuteness, and death as a protective mechanism. The collection's inspiration stems from Moon's personal journey through PTSD, leading to a fusion of cute childhood elements with Victorian silhouettes, creating a hybrid couture collection that is both beautiful and ugly.
The main motif of the collection, hybrid flowers, is reinterpreted through traditional millinery and couture techniques, with handmade flowers molded from velvet using heated metal. These flowers are translated into two-dimensional prints on silk and sequins, emphasizing old couture techniques in a modern, yet unconventional way.
The collection comprises 8 looks of womenswear, size 4, featuring modern couture, wearable couture, bow shirt, handmade flowers, and oversize bow dress, all meticulously crafted by Moon Jung Chang and her creative team.
The Hybrid Beauty collection was a two-year project, starting in August 2017 and concluding in May 2019. It was exhibited at the FIT museum in New York and showcased during New York Fashion Week S/S 2020, garnering attention for its unique fusion of aesthetics and storytelling.
Through extensive research on the brain and PTSD, Moon Jung Chang explored the concept of beauty and ugliness as not being opposites but rather existing as layers of the same skin. This exploration led to the creation of Hybrid Beauty, challenging the conventional notions of beauty and aesthetics.
The main challenge during the creation of Hybrid Beauty was visualizing the concepts of PTSD into real garments and reinterpreting historical elements through handmade flowers, a process that took almost two years to complete.
Moon Jung Chang's design philosophy for Hybrid Beauty promotes sustainability and timeless designs, emphasizing the dichotomy between beauty and ugliness as a visual vocabulary.
