Designed by Hui Liu, Helpmet is a smart health monitoring helmet specifically crafted for construction workers to ensure their safety in hot weather conditions and prevent heatstroke.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
As the demand for human construction grows, the risks of heat stroke among workers are increasing. Helpmet aims to address this by providing real-time monitoring and timely warnings to prevent irreversible damage caused by severe heat stroke.
Helpmet stands out with its ability to monitor and alert workers suffering from hot weather and intense labor to take a break. It utilizes sound, vibration, and light alerts to remind workers to rest, and provides guidance on avoiding heatstroke.
The helmet, weighing about 500g, is made using injection molding, shell processing, painting, and assembly, with materials such as PC, ABS, nylon, and natural rubber. It won the IDA Gold Award in January 2024.
Users pair the helmet with a cell phone app to activate it, allowing access to measurement data, staff sign information, and location. The helmet monitors vital signs and emits alerts for breaks if abnormalities occur. In critical situations, an alarm light activates, notifying the manager for timely action.
The project started in August 2023 in Shanghai and finished in November 2023. The design team conducted extensive research, including interviews with construction workers, to understand their working environment and the problems they face.
Helpmet is a testament to the dedication of the design team, led by Hui Liu, in addressing marginalized communities and crafting solutions for those often overlooked. Their goal is to create a more equitable and inclusive social environment through innovative design, ensuring that everyone receives the respect and support they deserve.
