Cloud: A Loft Style Vacation Apartment

Jui Min Chen's "Cloud" is a loft-style vacation apartment designed to evoke a sense of vacation in a small space, integrating the beauty of mountains and forests. The design features a curved shape symbolizing the embrace of greenery, with a focus on creating a strong connection with outdoor nature. The project was completed in Yilan, Taiwan, from October 2019 to January 2020.

The 40 square meter apartment utilizes a subtractive mindset, integrating living functions into the aesthetics of the space. Permeable building materials and suspended stairs are used to reduce spatial divisions and extend the visual space, while the curved shape visually guides the space, creating a connection between the interior and the outdoor nature.

The lightweight staircase made of thin steel panels and pine plywood serves as the visual axis of the design, allowing sunlight to penetrate through the holes, adding a rhythm of light and shadow. The use of simple lines and primary colors covers the supporting structure of the building, creating a cohesive and visually appealing space.

The design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach that meets professional and industrial requirements. The project showcases Jui Min Chen's ability to create a comfortable and relaxing living space, gathering emotions and taking the occupants as the starting point of the design.
