Award-winning architects Takaharu + Yui Tezuka unveil their innovative house design in Karuizawa, Japan
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Takaharu + Yui Tezuka, the renowned architectural duo, have unveiled their latest project, "The Pitched Roof," a modern house located in Karuizawa, Japan. The design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture, reinterpreting the concept of deep eaves to create a unique living space that seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings. The project, which began in July 2007 and was completed in May 2009, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021.
The house, with its extremely simple pitched roof, challenges the conventional notion of enclosed living spaces. By incorporating deep eaves and a blurred boundary between the interior and exterior, the design allows for easy transition between the inside and outside, creating a harmonious connection with nature. The cantilevered roof, supported by a folded structure, minimizes the need for additional support, akin to the concept of Japanese papercraft, Origami. This innovative approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also ensures structural integrity, even under snow pressure.
Designed for a well-known Japanese pop songwriter, the house provides a serene retreat from the pressures of daily life. The enclosed living spaces cater to the basic needs of the inhabitants, while the open spaces under the deep eaves offer a seamless connection to the natural surroundings. The sliding doors further enhance the flexibility of the living space, allowing for a shift in ambiance as desired.
Tezuka Architects, founded by Takaharu and Yui Tezuka in Tokyo in 1994, is known for its innovative and human-centric designs. The firm's approach to storytelling through architecture has garnered international acclaim, with "The Pitched Roof" being a testament to their commitment to reinterpreting traditional elements in a modern context. The project has not only revived the essence of deep eaves in contemporary architecture but has also set a new standard for harmonious integration with nature.
