Illustration Project "Horyukaku" by Aihara Nico

Aihara Nico's "Horyukaku" draws inspiration from the Japanese classic literature "Nanso Satomi Hakkenden," depicting a scene from Kabuki where the hero fights desperately on the castle Horyukaku. The illustrations harmoniously blend traditional Japanese motifs with Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, creating a nostalgic yet familiar experience.

The unique process involves hand-drawn paintings colored in Photoshop, achieving a vintage design quality. With a data size of 4556 x 6891 pixels at 600dpi, the illustration can be printed on paper of any size, making it versatile for various applications.

The project, which began in January 2019 and concluded in April 2019, has received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that contribute to quality of life improvements.

Aihara Nico, based in Hirakata, Japan, is an illustrator known for her wide-ranging work across various genres, including website illustrations, book illustrations, and goods design. Her unique style, whether in Western or Eastern drawing, features a retro-inspired aesthetic.
