FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEN: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Japanese Tea Utensils

Miwako Tanahashi's SEN lamp is a captivating fusion of tradition and modernity, taking inspiration from the "Chasen" used in the Japanese tea ceremony. The lamp's design focuses on the elegant form of the traditional utensil, offering a functional and sleek aesthetic while evoking a sense of attachment. By reimagining traditional tea utensils with contemporary materials and lines, Tanahashi introduces a new dimension to lighting.

SEN stands out as a lamp that can be appreciated as a decorative piece, akin to a flower or an art object, providing a serene escape from the bright modern world. Its unique design fosters a sense of attachment, offering high added value to users. The lamp features a central glass bulb enveloped by two parts at varying angles, softening light and shadow to create a sense of depth. The stainless steel outer shell exhibits a color gradation that changes with brightness and viewing angles, further enhancing its visual appeal.

The realization of the SEN lamp involves intricate craftsmanship, with 94 linear parts meticulously cut from a 0.8mm thick stainless steel plate and assembled into two rings. Advanced laser cutting technology enables the precise creation of these delicate components, while the color gradation in the stainless steel is achieved through a special technique. The lamp's technical specifications include dimensions of 115mm in width, 115mm in depth, and 176mm in height, showcasing its compact yet impactful presence.

Functionally, the cordless SEN lamp integrates LEDs and batteries within its body, allowing for convenient portability. Operable via a remote control, it offers versatility in placement, whether as a bedside companion, a table centerpiece, or an outdoor lighting solution. Tanahashi's design journey for SEN commenced in Japan during the summer of 2020, culminating in the creation of a prototype in 2021.

Recognizing the innovative prowess of the SEN lamp, Miwako Tanahashi was honored with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2022. This accolade celebrates the design's exceptional creativity and ingenuity, acknowledging its contribution to enhancing quality of life through the seamless integration of art, science, and technology.
