Sayoko Kitai's Butterfly Brooch is a captivating wearable art piece, inspired by the Morpho Rhetenor Helena Butterflies. The lifelike 3D butterfly is meticulously crafted using a unique double-sided 3D embroidery technique with genuine gold and platinum threads, resulting in a stunning and form-changeable wings.
This hand-crafted jewelry item can be worn as an accessory or displayed at home, showcasing the designer's innovative approach to embroidery and jewelry design. The piece measures 80mm in width, 70mm in depth, and 40mm in height, and weighs 7g.
Starting in June 2021 and finishing in December 2021 in Chiba, Japan, this project involved extensive research and experimentation to replicate the natural appearance and movement of butterfly wings. The use of genuine gold and platinum threads presented technical challenges, requiring the development of unique stitching and wiring methods to ensure the wings' firm attachment.
