Blazer: A Sleek and Sustainable Lighting Solution

Ninglu Zhang, a talented young designer, presents Blazer, a felt hanging lamp inspired by the clean cut and elegant folding of a blazer. The lamp, which debuted at Salone del Mobile in June 2022, offers a tool-free assembly from a flat felt sheet and is designed for easy mass production with minimal material waste.

Measuring 380mm x 1525mm x 5mm when flat and 787mm x 254mm x 432mm when assembled, Blazer's unique design and vibrant red color make it a captivating addition to any space. The lamp's simple shape creates a seamless flow for viewers, with strategically placed black snaps adding dimension and intrigue.

Utilizing AutoCAD for drafting and water jet cutting for customized metal washers, Zhang overcame challenges posed by limited facilities access during the height of the pandemic in 2020. The project, which commenced in August 2020 and concluded in December 2020 in Iowa, USA, represents applied research focusing on environmentally friendly production practices within both handcrafted and assembly line industries.

Blazer was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2024, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements. Ninglu Zhang's innovative designs have garnered international recognition, with exhibitions in prominent cities including Chicago, New York, and Milan.
