Architect Masashi Nakamoto Redefines Okinawan Housing with The Three Roof
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Architect Masashi Nakamoto has reimagined traditional Okinawan housing with "The Three Roof," a groundbreaking design that optimizes natural light and ventilation. Inspired by the need to brighten Okinawan houses while preserving their traditional features, the project began in March 2019 and was completed in December 2021 in Okinawa, Japan.
Nakamoto's design divides the roof into three parts, allowing ample daylight from the north side and enhancing airflow. The split roof also ensures suitable ceiling heights for different areas, creating a versatile and comfortable living space. The innovative approach maintains the traditional Amahaji, providing a flexible space under the eaves, while effectively managing the strong sunlight of Okinawa.
The Three Roof is a testament to Nakamoto's commitment to leveraging Okinawa's climate to inform his designs, harmonizing with the natural landscape and devising architecture that enhances livability. His innovative spatial design skills have earned him acclaim, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2024.
